• -The Harmony Society believed that Christ would return in their lifetime- They thought that the revelation of Earth was near.
• -Nonviolent Pacifist beliefs- Fighting was wrong, and anyone who did would be exiled.
• -They believed the old ways of life on Earth were coming to an end, and that a new kindom would soon be realized- They thought the Christ was coming, so the new ways were no longer needed.

• They failed because they insisted celibacy, which prevented new members from within, and many people didn't want to give up that much for a commune.

• Leader was imprisoned and threatened with exile if he didn't stop preaching.
